The Goldsberrys & Friends and The Shady Grovers

Last night, I was invited out to Casa Nueva in Athens, Ohio for a night of jamgrass with The Goldsberrys & Friends and The Shady Grovers, two bands from the Columbus music scene.

The night kicked off with The Goldsberrys & Friends, a band that's only been playing together about four months. You may as well have counted the first two songs in their set as part of their sound check, as they were still sorting things out and getting into their groove, but they quickly settled into their act. The Goldsberrys & Friends carried more of a traditional bluegrass sound that was really quite tame.

You could tell their green was showing, but it was a good show nonetheless. Each of the vocalists had great bluegrass voices, but the confidence didn't fully come through in much of the set. In addition, some of the musicians were visibly exerting a lot of effort to play. They still pulled it together for a solid sound, though, which is what really counts. The guitar and banjo also traded off some great riffs.

What I saw last night was a band still trying to find their sound. However, with a foot in the right direction, and some solid originals to boot, I'm excited to see how The Goldsberrys & Friends continue to develop.

The night's headliners, The Shady Grovers, were a whole other beast. Whatever "it" is, The Shady Grovers had it. With everything from a wicked harmonica, to a mean fiddle, The Shady Grovers carried a jamgrass style that made me think of Blues Traveler on bluegrass.

This band was highly professional, bringing a confidence in their "Nashville" sound that shown through in every aspect of their show. The band was having fun, and so was the crowd. A chair race took place across the dace floor, and I couldn't stop myself from moving.

If I wasn't sold already, and I was, their cover of "Friend of the Devil" was not just solid, it was rocking! **(way better than the version they have on YouTube)** That was, to me, the highlight of the show, though their cover of "You Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley" comes in at a close second. That's not to discount their originals, at all; each one was completely solid and fun to listen to!

Former last December, this was their 85th show. It seems to me that this is a group built to play to larger audiences. They've already played several festivals - Comfest, for one, for those of you around the Columbus area - and I would love to see them at even bigger venues. The Shady Grovers really has what it takes to go to Telluride Bluegrass Festival and get noticed in a big way. *Hint hint*

Black Bob Dylan, or L.A. Salami?

Welcome back, Bob Dylan!



I'm joking, of course, but L.A. Salami probably wouldn't mind comparison, seeing as how he claims Dylan's early music inspired him the way Woody Guthrie had inspired early Dylan. He even put in one of his songs that he had a tattoo of Bob Dylan on his arm.

Asked about the tattoo, Salami stated that it was just a metaphor.

Lookman Adekunle Salami hails from London. He got his first notable break when chosen to support Lianne La Havas on tour in 2012. He was then contacted by Burberry for a Burberry Acoustic Session, which led Salami to be the opener for the Burberry Prorsum Menswear Spring/Summer 2014 show in Kensington Palace Gardens, Hyde Park.

He's only got two EPs out right now, but you can purchase both Another Shade of Blue and The Prelude on Amazon for very reasonable prices, helping support a musician that sometimes has to sneak away from working at a cinema after the screening begins to play his gigs.

Luca Stricagnoli

Ever head of Luca Stricagnoli? Don't feel bad if you haven't, as he's still fairly new to the scene. But you should know who he is, because he's one of the most talented guitarists on the planet.


Hailing from Italy, Luca began studying classical guitar at the age of ten, but had quit for a long time before returning and teaching himself new techniques, perfecting them, then making his own, unconventional style.

This is the one that really impressed me the most. Luca makes use of two guitars, the one on the table in front of him heavily modified. He frets the notes, plays extra sets of strings and other additions to the modified guitar, makes use of multiple capos, and taps out some percussion.

Some more note fretting and percussive guitar. He also uses a a violin bow. And there's three guitars.

In addition to the usual, now he's using a recorder and some harmonicas.

Musician Interview: Megan Bee

I'd now like to introduce to you one of my favorite independent musicians, Megan Bee.

Q: How long have you been performing music?
A: I had a solo in the school Christmas pageant when I was in 1st grade.  I was dressed as a penguin and singing to help Santa remember who he was because he had gotten amnesia in a sleigh accident.

Q: I know you didn't start out in music. Could you give us a little of your background before you became a musician?
A: Yeah, went to college to study Ecotourism and focused on teaching environmental education.  I interned as a naturalist one summer at Camp Oty’ Okwa in the Hocking Hills, and I still teach there on occasion.  The schedule of the camp allowed me to have the winters off.  One winter I went on a journey to work on organic farms across the country.  Eventually my car broke down, I started backpacking, I found some great wilderness camping areas, and I met some people around a campfire who were playing music under the stars every night. 

Q: What inspired you to be a musician?
A: Really that first trip across country did it for me.  It was the joy of sharing music around the campfire.  I never had anything like that growing up.  It was a dream come true.

Q: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
A: My best friend’s parents owned a bar in high school so we spent a lot of time listening to jukebox classics: Fleetwood Mac, CCR, Merle Haggard, etc. I use to always listen to Country Gold on Saturday night where I found Lorretta Lyne, Patsy Cline, and Emmylou Harris.  Now I tend towards folk/Americana artists: John Prine, Steve Earl, Lucinda Williams, Iris Dement, Patty Griffin. 

Q: Which of your original songs do you enjoy playing the most? (Mine was always the Frog Song, by the way)
A: Thanks!  It really depends how I’m feeling and if I’m playing with other people.  I like to play them all. Many times I enjoy playing whatever song I’ve most recently written because it’s new. 

Q: What about songs you like to cover?
A: “Who will save your soul” by Jewel, anything by John Prine, and lots of old folk tunes that people will sing along with.

Q: I first encountered you at Wisteria Event Site during a festival. Could you talk about some of the festivals you've played and your experiences with them? I know you turned some heads at Nelsonville Music Fest earlier this year, earning you a spot on Gladden House Sessions.
A: Yeah, Nelsonville was great.  I love playing festivals because I get to be outside.  I love seeing communities come together at a fest.  People tend to slow down and take their time.

Q: I heard you got to play right after Jorma not too long ago at Fur Peace. How was that?
A: It was lovely!  It was outdoors during the Arts and Minds Festival.  Jorma and all of the folks that run Fur Peace are so laid back, kind, and welcoming. 

Q: Do you have any venues you frequent the most?
A Donkey Coffee is my standby spot here in Athens.  I love that back listening room. When I’m out west in the winter I spend many Saturday nights at “The Range.”

Q: Do you have a favorite show you've ever played?
A: On my last tour across country I played a spontaneous unplanned show to four naked people in a natural hotspring under an amazing sky of stars in the middle of nowhere.  I just thought “Man, why can’t every show be just like this?” We were all just so relaxed and had no expectations, worries, or other place to be except in that moment.

Q: What all recordings have you produced, and how may they be obtained?
A: I have 2 albums with my band Wormz and the Decomposers “Little Birdie” and “Grow”.  “Grow” is online in all the regular places including my website meganbeemusic.com.  A couple songs from “Little Birdie” are up on reverbnation.com/meganbee.  Of course you can always find my CDs at my shows.

Q: You fund your albums through Kickstarter? Can you talk about that?
A: When I funded “Grow” two years ago I was absolutely terrified to ask for help.  It’s hard for me to ask for help especially financially, but somehow I made it through.  People backed me, and that was such an encouragement.  I’m coming around to accepting that being an independent artist doesn’t mean I have to do everything on my own.  It just means that I have no recording label to back me so I am dependent on my fans.  I love this grassroots concept of supporting music.  I just ended a Kickstarter last month for my new solo album.   I had asked other friends for advice, done more research, and felt much more comfortable with the process. You can’t just create a project and hope it succeeds.  You have to work for it, spread the word, keep everyone informed, ask for help, and promote it.  In the end it was a great success, and I love how the crowd funding gets lots of people involved and builds momentum around a project.

Q: What are your current plans for your musical future? Any upcoming releases or exciting shows?
A: I’m working on my new solo album “A Sense of Place” right now out at Peachfork Studio with Bernie Nau.  I’m so excited about the work we’ve already done.  The album will be released sometime this fall.  I’ll be playing at the Paw Paw Festival on Saturday September 12th. I’ll once again be migrating south and west on a cross country tour later in the winter.

Q: I heard you've recently been enrolled in Song School?

A: I just returned from my week long study at Rocky Mountain Song School in Lyons, Colorado!  What an inspiration.  There were 180 songwriters and 30 instructors.  The experience was priceless.  I took classes on harmony, rhythm, directed writing, and children’s music. Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary) gave an amazingly moving talk about how music brings people together.  Besides classes we all spent every night playing music for each other. Connecting with other songwriters was the most valuable part of the week.

Pickin' On Series

My first encounter with the Pickin' On series was the Iron Horse cover of Modest Mouse's Float On. Actually, I think that was the first time I heard Float On. When I listened to the original later, I just couldn't like it as much as the first time I heard it, though it was still a good song. Later, I heard the cover by Iron Horse again and realized the version I had been searching for.

I would later come to realize that this was part of a larger series of "Pickin' On" albums when, looking up Greensky Bluegrass on YouTube, the search results threw Green Day Bluegrass at me and I couldn't not click it.

Done by Honeywagon and Cornbread Red, Green Day Bluegrass - Pickin' On Green Day - A Bluegrass Tribute turned out to be an amazing transition of genres, begging me to look deeper.

As it turns out, there's actually quite a list of "Pickin' On" albums.

The series is produced by CMH Records, an independent country and bluegrass label based out of Los Angles. The series began in 1990, when the founder of CMH died and his son took over, though it did not take off until the success of Pickin' On the Grateful Dead three years later. 

It's incredible how talented the musicians involved with the project are, stripping down and reconstructing songs from a wide range of sounds to fit into the bluegrass genre with such a smooth transition that has a quality to it that can't really be described.

Musician Interview: Jeremy Gibson

We've got our first musician interview! Allow me to now introduce to you Jeremy Gibson!


Q: How long have you been performing music?
A: I have been on stage for around 15 years on and off.

Q: What inspired you to be a musician?
A: Seeing smiles on so many peoples faces at once. That is a powerful thing.

Q: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
A:James tailor, Hank Williams, Glenn Phillips, Robert Smith.

Q: Which of your original songs do you enjoy playing the most?
A: Ms. Delilah

Q: What about songs you like to cover?
A: I like to cover as far across the board as possible 

I like to cover Easy Like Sunday Morning (The Commodores), Going Straight To Hell, (Hank 3) Falling Awake (Gary Jules), Rodeo Clowns (Jack Johnson), Franklin's Tower, Friend of the Devil, Ripple and others (Grateful Dead), a ton of old traditional songs are on my favorite to cover list also... Going Down That Road To Willow Tree.

Q: Do you have any venues you frequent the most?
A: Hocking Hills Winery and The Spa and Inn at Cedar Falls is also a monthly gig.

Q: Do you have a favorite show you've ever played?
A: Diamond Music Festival. Every year at Lake Logan Ohio. An event brought to you by Insea sound shop Nelsonville Ohio.

Q: The first time I saw you live, you played a song you announced as being inspired at a Grateful Dead show you were at and it was my favorite song of the night. Could you give the story behind the song here?
A: I was on a heavy dose of LSD in the early 90s and I was getting down to some dead and I thought I had beans burning back at camp. I freaked a little and headed back to the camp… The song pretty much describes the fact I had never started a fire or did I pack beans. The rest of the song just basically describes the events up to the realization of no beans and how happy I was that I did not burn any beans and then just simply describes the rest of the trip through the night. I wrote this song 20 years after the trip….

Q: How many times have you seen the Grateful Dead?
A: Just a handful. I am not what you would call dead head I just really enjoyed the music and the ride. Thanks Jerry!

Q: What all recordings have you produced, and how may they be obtained? What are your current plans for your musical future?
A: I have two cd’s that I sell at my shows for 10 bucks, a double album of both on one disc.
My plans for my musical future are to just keep people smiling until I fly.

Greensky Bluegrass

Today I'd like to talk about one of my favorite bands in the bluegrass/newgrass genre, Greensky Bluegrass.



Formed in late 2000, the band released its first album, Less than Supper, in May 2004. In 2006, the band won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, earning them a spot on the main stage in 2007, releasing their next album, Tuesday Letter, soon after under the production of Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth. The band released Five Interstates in 2008 and Handguns in 2011, the latter of which debuted at #3 on the Billboard's Bluegrass Charts. If Sorrow Swims was released in 2014.

I find Greensky Bluegrass to be one of the best put-together bands in the bluegrass genre, carrying a unique sound that blends old and new in a way I can't describe other than to have you listen.

Mandolin Orange

Every blog has to start somewhere, so I'll start by covering the band I'm listening to right now; Mandolin Orange.


This duo from North Carolina features Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz in a potent musical combination of bluegrass, country and folk. Their clean, stripped down sound is refreshing in its simplicity, featuring primarily guitar and mandolin or violin combinations with strong lyrical abilities. 

Beginning with their debut, Quiet Little Room, in 2010, Mandolin Orange has since released Hard Hearted Stranger/Haste Make (2011), This Side of Jordan (2013), and Such Jubilee (2015).
